Hours after Boris Johnson’s victory in the Tory leadership last Tuesday, I headed out to the Borgie area in Cambuslang to do some local campaigning. As I made my way around the local streets one thing was clear. The last thing the people of Rutherglen and Cambuslang need is an out of touch right wing Eton educated Tory who does not understand the problems people in this area face.
You see Boris Johnson would not understand the increasing numbers reliant on the support of the Rutherglen and Cambuslang foodbank. He would not be able to relate to a young worker in Cambuslang doing a shift in a fast food restaurant and needing to also work on a mail delivery van to make ends meet. Our new PM does not care about families in the Burnhill area who cannot afford to give their kids a proper breakfast.
Instead he favours tax cuts for the well-off while ignoring the scandalous levels of inequality in the country. Whether you are call centre worker in Cambuslang or factory worker in Carlisle – Boris Johnson is not the leader you need.
He also lacks the style, depth and personal touch required at this time of political crisis. You only had look at his acceptance speech where he looked more like a bingo caller than a new Prime Minister.
I also believe that the gunboat diplomacy style will only escalate the Brexit crisis. He is quite prepared to take the UK out of Europe without a deal. Brexit in itself would be a disaster for the country but to leave without a deal would be even worse. It is unacceptable that he would crash the country out of the EU and cause job losses and untold misery.
It is clear that there is going to be a General Election. With the government majority of only 2 and the chaotic start to the Johnson premiership, I cannot see the government surviving. Boris Johnson is unable to unite the Tory party never mind the House of Commons.
Frankly, the country needs a General Election to break the impasse. Labour will welcome that election and campaign in it with vigour. The country needs a change in Government to deliver a public vote on Brexit and a change in approach to tackle the growing levels of inequality. Central to that change will be a £10 minimum wage and an approach that puts people before profit.
Boris will be a disaster and a short-lived PM. He is unfit to hold the office of Prime Minister. It is time up for the Tories. Bring on the General Election and let’s have a Labour Government.
