James Kelly MSP, who is Scottish Labour's candidate for Rutherglen at the upcoming Holyrood elections, has committed to fighting for Scotland's railways to be brought into public ownership.
Scottish Labour has said more public subsidy for private rail firms - including handing out hefty management fees - is unacceptable and that the Scottish Government should follow the Welsh Government’s lead, end the current Abellio Scotrail and Caledonian Sleeper franchises, and bring both under public ownership and control.
It comes after Scottish Labour criticised the Scottish Government over planned cuts in key capital spending areas such as rail services, and its lack of readiness with projects to kick start a post-covid economy.
James Kelly MSP said :"The rail franchise system in Scotland simply has not worked for people.
"The Scottish Government has the ability to bring our trains back into public ownership, and end the failed rail franchises that have let people down.
"Instead, it's clear from the 2021 budget that the SNP will continue to prop up private rail firms who's key focus is profit.
“I have spent my time as an MSP standing up for people across Rutherglen and Cambuslang who have been forced to rely on an unreliable and overpriced service.
“We need a publicly run rail system that actually works for people and put passengers before profits, and if I am re-elected in May I am committed to continuing that fight."
